The Birth of a Wildcat Legacy: The K Club Story
A Dream Forged in Friendship (1961)
It began with a simple but powerful idea to unite a family of Wildcats, beyond the game. In May 1961, two Kentucky lettermen, Frank Seale and Robert Montgomery, sat down in Paintsville, KY, and envisioned an organization that would:
-
Foster lifelong fellowship among UK varsity athletes.
-
Support the University’s athletic programs within NCAA/SEC guidelines.
-
Create a home on campus known as the “K-Men’s Room” where letterwinners could gather.
-
Celebrate K-Day, an annual tradition honoring UK’s athletes.
By June 1961, Athletics Director B.A. Shively embraced the vision. That fall, the first K-Day was born at the UK vs. Florida State football game (November 4, 1961. The event marked the unofficial start of something extraordinary.
The Founding Years (1962–1963)
On September 22, 1962, the dream became reality. At the second K-Day, over 100 lettermen gathered for a luncheon with Coach Charlie Bradshaw, then voted to adopt the K-Men’s Association Constitution. The first officers were elected:
-
President: Frank Seale
-
Vice President: Harry Ulinski (Football) / Wallace Jones (Basketball)
-
Secretary: Dick Rushing
-
Treasurer: Carl “Hoot” Combs
In 1963, the “K-Man of the Year” award was established, and the first “Dollars for Scholars” program raised $3,600 to support student-athletes. This was a testament to the K Club’s commitment to education and community.
Traditions Take Root
-
🏌️‍♂️ The Paintsville Golf Classic (1963):

🏠A Home of Their Own (1977):
After years of planning, the K Club House opened near Commonwealth Stadium in 1977, funded by $100,000 in member donations. For over 45 years, it’s been the heartbeat of Wildcat pride.
Legacy of Impact
From furnishing the first K-Room to funding scholarships through the Blue-White Game, the K Club has always been more than an alumni group. We are a family.
“We didn’t just wear the UK jersey; we became stewards of its spirit. That’s what the K Club is all about.”
– Carl Combs
